Big Island's Kohala Coast: Mobility Guide

Anaeho'omalu Bay (A-Bay) Shoreline Path
  • Length & Setup: An accessible, paved shoreline path running along Anaeho'omalu Bay and the grounds of the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort area.
  • Route: Connects the Waikoloa Beach Marriott and Lava Lava Beach Club at A-Bay on the south end to the Hilton Waikoloa Village and Kings' Land area on the north end.
  • Highlights: The path runs directly past the ancient Hawaiian fishponds and within easy reach of Kings' Shops and Queens' MarketPlace, two outdoor hubs full of accessible shops and popular restaurants.
  • Mobility Advantage: Excellent for exploring the heart of Waikoloa Beach Resort without the hassle of a car.

Kalāhuipua'a Historic Trail (Mauna Lani)
  • Length & Setup: A scenic, 1.5-mile loop (round-trip) with a mix of paved sections, wooden boardwalks, and rugged lava rock through ancient fishponds and archaeological sites.
  • Best Access Point: Start at the trailhead parking lot off Pauoa Road at the Mauna Lani Resort. The paved sections near the fishponds and Mauna Lani hotel grounds offer the smoothest entry for users with mobility equipment.
  • Avoid: The interior loop sections that cut through rough lava — they include uneven 'a'ā lava and grade changes up to 8–12% that can be impassable for standard wheelchairs.
  • Trail Conditions: Because parts of this trail transition into lava rock and packed dirt, some sections may prove challenging or impassable for standard wheelchairs. Stick to the boardwalks and paved fishpond areas for the best experience.
  • Nature: A fantastic location for spotting honu (green sea turtles) basking on the shoreline and tropical fish swimming through the ancient Hawaiian fishponds!

Big Island's Kona Coast: Mobility Guide

Navigating Kailua-Kona
  • The Vibe: Kailua-Kona is known for its historic oceanfront town, vibrant local shops, fresh-caught seafood dining, and laid-back old-Hawaii atmosphere. It's also the host town of the annual Ironman World Championship.
  • The Terrain: Kailua-Kona's main strip runs along Ali'i Drive, which is mostly flat and walkable along the coast, but steep cross-streets connect the oceanfront to the inland shopping centers and hillside resorts above town.
  • Mobility Advantage: Because Ali'i Drive stretches roughly 7 miles from Kailua Pier down to Keauhou with shops, restaurants, and beaches spread along the way, mobility scooters are a massive help for getting around easily without exhausting yourself.

Ali'i Drive Coastal Path
  • Length & Setup: A scenic, walkable coastal corridor along Ali'i Drive with paved sidewalks and oceanfront walkways stretching roughly 7 miles from Kailua Pier to Keauhou.
  • Route: The path begins at Kailua Pier and Kamakahonu Beach on the north end and runs south past Hulihe'e Palace, Mokuaikaua Church, the Royal Kona Resort, and a string of oceanfront condos and restaurants, ending near the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa in Keauhou.
  • Highlights: Beautiful panoramic ocean views, historic Hawaiian landmarks, oceanfront dining and shopping, world-famous Kona sunsets, and excellent humpback whale watching from the path during the winter season (November to May).
  • Mobility Advantage: The sidewalks along Ali'i Drive are paved and flat near the waterfront, making this one of the easiest accessible strolls on the Big Island.

We had an excellent experience with Mobility Store while visiting Maui. Before arriving, we were able to reserve several items for my dad, including a transport chair and a shower seat with armrests. We were staying at a rental house, and everything was delivered promptly early the morning after we landed in Maui, which made the start of our trip so much easier. After the first night, we realized my dad also needed a raised toilet seat. My mom messaged them, and they were able to quickly add a raised toilet seat with handles and deliver it along with the other equipment that morning. That level of responsiveness was incredibly helpful. All of the equipment was extremely clean and in excellent condition—honestly, it looked almost new. They even included bleach wipes in case we wanted to wipe anything down, though everything already appeared very well sanitized. We later realized the transport chair wasn’t quite meeting our needs, even though it was in great shape. My husband and I drove to their warehouse in Lahaina and were able to easily exchange it for a 20-inch wheelchair. Their warehouse was very clean and organized, and the durable medical equipment was in outstanding condition. The wheelchair we received was spotless and looked nearly brand new. I’ve worked in caregiving and healthcare for over 35 years and have used thousands of pieces of durable medical equipment throughout my career. I was genuinely impressed by the quality of their equipment, their professionalism, and how kind and prompt everyone was. I would highly recommend Mobility Store to anyone visiting Maui who needs mobility equipment. Having the right equipment available can make a huge difference in helping someone with decreased mobility enjoy their trip comfortably, and this team made the entire process easy and stress-free.

Grateful that we had a great experience renting a car seat from Akamai - we picked and dropped it off at our rental car place. They were responsive and were able ensure we received our seat in coordination with our flight arrival times. Highly recommended his local service, saved us a ton of headache and very reasonable $!

This company provides a great service to Maui. They have a huge variety of mobility and accessibility equipment for rent. They deliver and pick up for no extra charge. We rented some accessibility items that made the week much easier for us, and we also rented the beach walker, which was so much fun. We could walk on the beach again! It is large and difficult to steer on hard surfaces, but once you are on the sand it works very well.

I had an awesome experience with Akamai. Upon arrival after a 10-hour flight to Maui Hawaii, my son's legs had swollen so badly that he could not walk. We contacted Akamai on a Saturday morning on a holiday weekend and they had a wheelchair to us within an hour and a half. They also had other items to offer like shower chair, etc. They communicated drop off and pick up by text message. The price was very reasonable. I would highly recommend them.

I had a perfect experience with Akamai Mobility. A fracture in my knee was poorly timed, and I considered not taking my first ever trip to Maui, but knowing that medical rentals would be at the resort upon arrival is what helped me make the decision to go. The equipment was clean and in excellent condition. Communication is top notch. They responded quickly to messages and proactively let me know when the equipment was dropped off and when it would be picked up. I am pleased with the service I received. We saw another guest on crutches at the resort and told her to consider renting a wheelchair from Akamai for more ease and options. Highly recommend!

So happy to be able to rent a mobility device for my mother in law. She got to experience so much with us because of this rental. We appreciate this business. Our delivery guy was kind and helpful with helping us learn how to load/unload and use the device, as well knowledge of where to go and places not able to go to. Mahalo for providing this service. Who deserts a customer at the last minute after holding a 5-month reservation??? Certainly not a reputable company!!! FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED
THANK YOU SO MUCH, AKAMAI MOBILITY!!!

Oh my gosh. These people are so amazing! They were so helpful and accommodating. They have a wide variety of rental options and help you decide what is best for you. No pressure. Free local delivery and pickup. They are service oriented in a world that has forgotten what service is. I could not recommend them more highly!

We rented their heavy duty 4 wheel scooter so my husband (325 pounds) and I could enjoy our vacation together. He doesn't walk distances anymore and this scooter works on pavement, grass and packed natural surfaces. We went everywhere we wanted even to Duke's for dinner where he parked it next to table. We went from Westin resort on Ka'anapali beach all the way to Times Supermarket - Honokowai via the seaside boardwalk and sidewalks. We attended the outdoor market at the university near Kahalui on both Saturday's and we looked at all booths! The battery life was great too and so easy to recharge when we got back to our condo at end of day. The unit disassembled and reassembled easily for loading & unloading to/from our rental vehicle. The bellman at condo became very quick at putting it in or taking it out. Also, we could do it alone. Once batteries and seat are lifted off wheel base, the base front wheels could easily be put inside edge of van then we lifted rear and rolled right in. Love that lever on rear that makes it free wheel or lock. We highly recommend getting a scooter from Akamai Mothers & Mobility!
