Big Island Beach Mobility Rentals
Beach Mobility Rentals Big Island
Purpose-built beach mobility delivered to your Kona or Waikoloa resort — sand-ready, stable, and easy to use from the moment you arrive.
The Big Island’s iconic beaches — Hapuna Beach, Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay), Mauna Kea Beach, and the coves along the Kohala Coast — are some of the most stunning in Hawaii. But soft sand is the single biggest accessibility barrier for visitors with mobility needs. Standard wheelchair and rollator wheels sink. Akamai Mobility offers two purpose-built solutions: an all-terrain beach wheelchair for riders who’ll be pushed, and an all-terrain beach walker for riders who can walk but need stability. Both use wheels engineered to roll over sand, gravel, grass, and rocks without sinking — giving real beach access at every Big Island shoreline. We deliver across Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa, with over 15 years of local experience helping visitors reach the water’s edge.

Beach Wheelchair
All-Terrain Wheels with Rear Swivel Design — The Only One in Hawaii
Best For: Caregiver-pushed beach outings, riders who can’t walk on sand, full-day beach days with loved ones, riders who want to reach the water’s edge.
Specs:
- Weight Capacity: Up to 250 lbs
- Frame: Reinforced healthcare-grade lightweight PVC
- Front Wheels: Large inflatable tires for smooth rolling over soft sand
- Rear Wheels: Heavy-duty swivel wheels for easy maneuverability
- Terrain: Soft sand, soil, mixed beach surfaces
- Footrest: Comfortable foot and leg rest for a relaxation position
- Use: Designed for caregiver pushing
Why the Rear Swivel Wheels Matter: Most beach wheelchairs use fixed rear wheels, which makes turning on sand exhausting for the caregiver. Akamai Mobility is the only provider in Hawaii offering beach wheelchairs with rear swivel wheels, dramatically reducing the effort required to maneuver on the beach — and making the experience far more enjoyable for everyone.
Beach Walker
All-Terrain Rollator for Standing Beach Access
Best For: Riders who can walk but need stability on sand, solo beach access, visitors who want hands-free support without a caregiver, walking along the shoreline at sunset.
Specs:
- Wheel Design: Soft, wide Wheeleez polyurethane wheels — engineered to roll across loose sand, gravel, soil, and grass without sinking
- Built-In Seat: Padded with backrest for resting between segments of a long beach walk
- Frame: Anodized aluminum (corrosion-resistant for saltwater environments)
- Handle Height: Fully adjustable to match rider posture
- Storage Pouch: Mesh compartment for water bottles, sunscreen, and beach essentials
- Transport: Folds flat for easy car trunk loading on beach trip days
- Operation: Self-propelled — the rider walks with rolling support, hands-free for caregivers
Why It Works on Sand: Standard rollator wheels sink in soft sand because they’re narrow and hard. The Wheeleez polyurethane wheels are wide and soft, spreading weight across more surface area — the same principle that lets snowshoes work on snow. The result is a rollator that rolls smoothly across surfaces other walkers can’t handle.

Beach Mobility for the Big Island's Iconic Shorelines
The Big Island has some of Hawaii’s most beloved beaches, and they’re often the highlight of any visitor’s trip. For travelers with mobility needs, reaching the water’s edge has traditionally meant either staying back from the sand entirely or relying on heroic caregiver effort to push a standard wheelchair through a surface it wasn’t designed for. Beach mobility equipment changes that calculation completely.
Hapuna, A-Bay, and the Kohala Coast Beaches
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is consistently ranked among the top beaches in the United States — half a mile of fine white sand, calm summer waters, and dramatic views. The state park also offers a beach wheelchair available through Hawaii County Parks (call ahead to confirm availability), but renting from Akamai Mobility ensures the right equipment is at your hotel ready to go. Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay) in front of the Waikoloa Beach Resort area is the easiest beach to access if you’re staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village or Waikoloa Beach Marriott — flat, paved shoreline path, then soft sand. Mauna Kea Beach (Kauna’oa Bay) and the smaller coves along the Kohala Coast are quieter, more private alternatives. All four work well with both our Beach Wheelchair and Beach Walker.
Choosing Between Beach Wheelchair and Beach Walker
The decision is straightforward: will the rider walk on the beach, or be pushed? Riders who can stand and walk but need stability or fatigue easily benefit from the Beach Walker — it provides hands-free support, has a built-in seat for rest breaks, and lets the rider stay independent on the sand. Riders who can’t walk on sand (whether due to permanent mobility limitations or temporary injury) are best served by the Beach Wheelchair, with the major bonus that our rear-swivel design makes it the easiest model in Hawaii for a caregiver to push. Couples often rent both — one Beach Wheelchair and one Beach Walker — so both partners have the right equipment for their needs.
Sunset, Snorkeling, and Beach-Day Logistics
Big Island beach days are often half-day commitments — drive to the beach, set up, swim, eat lunch, relax, then watch the sunset before heading back. Beach mobility equipment makes that full day workable instead of exhausting. Both our beach wheelchairs and beach walkers fold for transport, so they fit in most rental car trunks for trips to less-developed beaches. For visitors staying at Kohala Coast resorts with shoreline access, we can deliver beach equipment directly so it’s waiting when you walk down to the sand. And for cruise passengers arriving at Kailua-Kona Bay, same-day beach mobility rentals can be arranged for shore excursions to nearby beach destinations.
